It seems common sense isn’t so common nowadays. How can someone be both an anti-capitalist AND a business owner? One can attempt to live their life as a social justice warrior while running their business, but how long will it last before one or the other collapses?

This former coffee shop owner took his chances – Gabriel Sims-Fewer founded The Anarchist, a coffee shop located in Toronto, Canada, that functioned on a “pay what you can” system, according to a recent article from The Daily Wire, announced it would be shutting its doors after less than a year of business.

According to the company’s website, Sims-Fewer expressed his appreciation to experiment with “living and working in ways that don’t enthusiastically embrace the pure misanthropy of capitalism.”

The shop’s failure was blamed on the anti-capitalist business lacking “seed capital” from “ethically bankrupt sources.” Ultimately, it left Sims-Fewer “unable to weather the quiet winter season, or to grow in the ways needed to be sustainable longer-term.”

He closes out his “About Us” statement with “Fuck the rich. Fuck the police. Fuck the state. Fuck the colonial death camp we call “Canada,” Solidarity, Gabriel aka The Anarchist.”

Under his “Frequently Asked Questions” page, Sims-Fewer says the opportunities he has for being a “white, cisgender, queer man” has led him to “hire people who aren’t white, cisgender, heterosexual men, make them equal owners, and follow their lead in making the place less white-male-centered than the industry standard.”

We’re sure it was just the bad coffee, (or maybe it was bad donuts) that led to this coffee shops shut down.
