Dan Simmons explains that in Kirkuk, Iraq, their biggest threat wasn’t IEDs but sniper fire in a dense urban environment where every rooftop and window could hide a shooter, and as a trained sniper himself he could see exactly where he’d post up on his own convoy.
He says standing exposed in a Humvee turret felt especially vulnerable, but having a minigun capable of firing 4,400 rounds a minute of 7.62—powerful enough to “cut a house in half”—made local fighters terrified of engaging the guys with tan helmets and that gun truck.
