Eight years before Taylor Swift was born, a band formed and has been entertaining fans and blowing out their eardrums for over four decades. That band is Metallica, still relevant and drawing massive turnouts to their concerts. Case in point was a recent show at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, where Metallica drew 20,000 more fans for their show than the incomparable Taylor Swift.
And that was just the first of two concerts Metallica was putting on in the Dallas Cowboys stadium. Swift did three shows there in the spring and couldn’t touch the attendance of the Metallica crowd.
To be fair, the stage configuration for the Metallica concert played a role. It was in the middle of the stadium floor so every seat could be sold. For Swift’s shows, 20% of the venue was blocked by a video board.
The numbers don’t lie, though; Swift drew 72,000 fans for each show, and Metallica squeezed in 100,000 of their followers. The performance on Friday night was carried live in movie theaters worldwide, too, answering the question of whether Metallica was still relevant.
The one complaint hardcore Metallica fans have had over the years is that a Metallica show is too short. They played 16 songs at their show Friday, far less than half that Swift performed during stops in her Eras Tour.
Don’t kid yourself; Metallica has fans almost as rabid as Swifties. The only difference is that some could have warrants for their arrest, and thousands could be hard of hearing after decades of ear-splitting fandom.
