Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told The Washington Post that the discovery led to an elevated security alert and evacuation. The Washington D.C. fire department’s hazardous materials team radioed: “We have a yellow bar saying cocaine hydrochloride.”
The complex was evacuated at about 8:45 pm Sunday evening as fire and emergency crews were brought in to do the rapid test. Although the substance was initially confirmed as cocaine, the White House issued the powder to be sent for further testing, according to the Associated Press.
“The item was sent for further evaluation and an investigation into the cause and manner of how it entered the White House is pending,” the Secret Service said. Authorities claimed cameras and entrance logs would be examined as part of the investigation to determine who had access to the area.
The President’s son Hunter Biden, 53, who acknowledged a prior addiction to crack cocaine, was on the White House grounds Friday before heading off to Camp David to meet with his father for the second weekend in a row.
The First Family returned to the White House on Tuesday.
