First reported by the Washington Post, sources familiar with the matter report that the Trump campaign has begun scouting venues like basketball arenas another other indoor spaces that can still accommodate thousands of people at a time. A separate source indicated that there are currently no large outdoor events scheduled, and the next Trump rally will be held at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina on Wednesday. The stadium can accommodate just under 11,000.
The former president’s enormous outdoor gatherings have been a staple of his campaign strategy since the early days of his first run for office, sometimes with tens of thousands of people attending the events. Crowd size has often been a point of personal pride for Trump, with one former Trump spokesperson-turned-critic telling the Post that “it gives him a lot of joy and energy being with large crowds. He feeds off their energy.”
However, these rallies have long been a source of concern for the Secret Service given the logistical challenges of securing an open-air venue from possible threats.
