The nonprofit group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sent a letter to First Lady Jill Biden asking her to replace easter eggs with potatoes for the annual Easter Egg Roll on the White House South Lawn.

“Instead of promoting the deleterious factory farming and slaughter industries, will you please initiate the annual White House Potato Roll?” PETA president Ingrid Newkirk asked in her letter. The egg roll is supposed to occur on April 1st.

Such a replacement would not “exploit any sentient beings and would encourage empathy and kindness to animals while supporting potato farmers in the US.”

She went on: “Potatoes are the most popular vegetable in the country and can be safely dyed, allowing for spudtacular traditional activities, such as rolling them, seeking for them, and decorating them. You could even hold potato sack races and games of hot potato!”

“Easter is not a time of renewal or joy for chickens on egg factory farms,” Newkirk lamented. “It can take up to 36 hours in typically hellish conditions for a hen—who spends her entire life in a cage smaller than a letter-sized sheet of paper—to produce just one of the thousands of eggs slated to be used at the White House Easter Egg Roll.”

Trying to make a pragmatic argument, Newkirk cited the rising price of eggs as a reason replace them—which could prove insulting to the Bidens, who are attempting to convince the public that the American economy is great.

Newkirk also cited 2022 avian flu outbreak, which has killed 82 million birds, as a reason for getting rid of eggs.
