In part 2 of 3 we discuss the power of self awareness and realization. We as leaders needs to reflect on every possibility that includes ourselves as to why our people are not performing to the level we expect. Then one year I “looked myself in the mirror” and said “What if it’s my fault they aren’t good leaders?” Am I asking them to do something…be something they don’t know how to do or be? I found that it was exactly the case! Some players thought because they or their teammates were talented they were the leaders. Others thought it was more of a popularity contest on who should be “captain” or the leader of the team. Many thought if they didn’t have the title or position on the team then they weren’t able to lead because it “wasn’t their job.” Few of them thought that if they yelled enough and got into the face of their teammates enough that they were leading. That revelation hit me in the face like a ton of bricks. How do these thoughts that I had about my team apply to you, your team, or the people that you lead?

When I took over the baseball program for the previous three years they averaged 8 wins a year. When I left to come to South Florida our program over the last ten years averaged 20 wins a year. Someone asked what they thought the biggest difference was. I replied with “Sustained, consistent, quality leadership in both myself, my staff, and my players.” We were a title one, low income, very diverse school.  We were able to compete strongly against and beat teams with better players and better resources than we had due to the leadership skills and mentality our players developed. This success is not mine, it first belongs to God. Secondly, it is attributed to my players and staff who over the years bought into the importance of leadership and also executed it during the season. How does that fit where God has you? Your company may not have all the resources your competitors do. How can you as a leader overcome that? How can you beat the teams that are supposed to beat you? ….Final part “The Plan” next article!

Be Courageous. Be the leader God has created you to be.  Until next time…Keep growing…Keep Learning…Keep Leading.
