Lots of people were excited to see standup comedian Jo Koy host the Golden Globes on Sunday. Unfortunately, none of those people were in attendance at the event.

The Filipino phenom can pull in arenas full of fans and has multiple Netflix & Comedy Central specials…but on Sunday evening, he may have met his match onstage at the increasingly unpopular awards show.

Now, Jo Koy is undoubtedly funny, but his strength lies in long-form personal stories.

The intro to every awards show involves a series of disconnected one-liners strung into a monologue, and Koy’s Golden Globe performance was no different.

During the show, it was clear that he needed the audience to respond well, and he appeared visibly uncomfortable in his new role.

But before you buy into the wave of criticism saying he bombed, let’s take a closer look.

First, a large room with high ceilings dissipates laughter. No matter how loud they laugh, the sound will be muted in a room that big.

Secondly, you could argue that the camera crew sabotaged the jokes by cutting to people who weren’t laughing instead of everyone who was.

Third, comedy works best when the audience is facing forward and sitting shoulder-to-shoulder. At the Golden Globes, they’re sprawled out around circular ballroom tables.

No comedy special would ever be filmed under these conditions…and for good reason.

There was also a writer’s strike going on for months before the show, and Jo was told less than 10 days ago he would be the host.

And now we focus on the biggest problem: the audience.

A warm crowd helps a comedian along…but the show’s celebrity guests gave their host absolutely nothing on Sunday. The A-Listers looked at Koy as if to say, “Who let the housekeeper get ahold of the microphone?”

Besides, getting that crowd to crack a smile was an impossible task anyway. Most people in attendance have had so many fillers and Botox injections that they couldn’t show emotion even if they wanted to.

To make matters worse, acting like you’re offended at all times is one of the conditions for continued employment in Hollywood. That leaves very little wiggle room for comedy.

By nature, all punchlines end in someone or something being the “butt of the joke.” Nowadays, that’s just not acceptable among jaded leftists that take themselves far too seriously.

Take Koy’s lightweight jab at pop sensation Taylor Swift, for example:

“Unlike the NFL we promise not to cut to Taylor Swift as often!” he quipped.

Unsure if she should be offended, Swift just frowned and took a long sip of champagne to buy time until she could consult with her team about it.

The audience would have more readily embraced and fawned over a comedian they saw as an equal like Robin Williams or Eddie Murphy. But for an Asian outsider with a slim theatrical resume, they gave him none of the fake love they offer their usual hosts.

With that said, Jim Gaffigan was able to land the biggest laugh of the night with some dark truth: “I don’t know what I’m doing here, I’m from Indiana… I’m not even a pedophile.”

In the end, it didn’t really matter who won last night. We all lost big at the Golden Globes because the left once again robbed us of something that used to be fun.

And like Koy’s hosting, that’s obviously no laughing matter.

But as it turns out, Jo Koy wasn’t the first choice for hosting the Golden Globes this year. Unfortunately, the first guy they tried didn’t do too well either…
