The total number of candidates in the GOP presidential primary field hit the dirty dozen mark on Thursday. Congressman Will Hurd now is officially the 12th candidate in the GOP primary race.

Hurd has an interesting history. He was a CIA operative before getting elected then represented the El Paso area for three terms before deciding against re-election in 2020. He was a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, and got his district to flip from blue to red.

Hurd’s memoir, American Reboot, highlights his moderate approach as he asks his party not to be racist, sexist or homophobic. Interestingly, he is one of the few Republicans to raise the alarm about income inequality – calling for an appeal to the middle of the voting populace versus the hard left or right. Unsurprisingly, he was in favor of Trump’s second impeachment. Hurd also said he wouldn’t pardon Trump, setting himself apart from the field. In his announcement video, he hit Trump right out of the gate:

“The soul of our country is under attack. At home, illegal immigration and fentanyl stream into our country. Inflation still out of control. Crime and homelessness growing in our cities and liberals do nothing. President Biden can’t solve these problems or won’t, and if we nominate a lawless, selfish, failed politician like Donald Trump who lost the House, Senate and the White House, we all know Joe Biden will win again. Republicans deserve better, America deserves better. It’s common sense.”

Hurd continued: “I envision an America where the economy thrives, because we harness technologies like artificial intelligence to grow American jobs, not unemployment.”

Hurd is a key board member of OpenAI claiming he wants to incorporate AI to develop more American jobs. But, Twitter users claim that message is part of a key, conspiratorial master plan:

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote on his company’s website: “Will brings a rare combination of expertise—he deeply understands both artificial intelligence as well as public policy, both of which are critical to a successful future for AI. We are thrilled to add his experience and leadership to our board.” Now, two of technologies most famous and newest entrants, Bitcoin and OpenAI, have their candidates. Suarez is running hard on creating a central digital currency bank and wants to offer federal protections for the emerging payment method. Hurd’s ideas on how to implement artificial intelligence for the good is vague, and that might raise a red flag for some voters.

Still, Hurd is an unique, niche candidate. Aside from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, every other GOP candidate is treating Trump with kid gloves. They are frightened to death to even lob a mild criticism at him – unlike Hurd.
