We are now less than two weeks away from Thanksgiving. Many of us are taking to the air to visit family and friends for the holiday. According to the Hopper App, 70% of Americans are preparing to travel on Thanksgiving. Airports report nearly 25 million seats will be filled on departure flights this year.

A way to help everyone get home safely and on time for dinner is to leave your gun at home. TSA tweeted out this photo which has since gone viral.

If there were an award for America’s Most Stupid Traveler, it would go to the person who thought they could conceal a gun inside a turkey. A TSA officer at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport spotted the handgun on an x-ray machine. Security checkpoints are then immediately shut down, stopping passengers from getting to their flights. TSA inspects the stuffed turkey, and out comes a gun. Local police are called, and the weapon is taken away along with the suspect.

The gun accounts for only one of the more than 700 guns caught at security checkpoints in Florida. Most of those guns were loaded and had ammunition chambered. Orlando International Airport seized 129 firearms, the most out of all Florida’s airports. On a bigger scale, TSA reports it has confiscated more than 5,000 guns this year.

TSA does allow you to travel with a firearm, but not when it’s stuffed in a turkey. Your firearm must be in a checked bag, unloaded, and packed separately from ammunition in a locked hardback case. You must also notify an employee at the airline check-in counter.

Please do not be the reason people are forced to miss a flight or reschedule because you decided not to transport your gun the proper way.
