In this video, Patrick Bet-David explains the critical role that a parent’s behavior plays in raising a child.
Patrick begins by sharing a phrase that has always stuck with him: “parenting is caught more than taught.” As he explains, the saying refers to the fact that children emulate the actual behavior of their parents, not merely the values they preach. A parent needs to become a model of behavior, and kids will follow.

Patrick relates another saying which he heard recently in church, said by a traveling pastor: “Your ceiling as a dad will one day become the floor that your kids stand on.”
The pastor elaborated: “all of the things that you accomplish, all of the things that you become really good at, all the things that you still struggle with, will be the very foundation that your kids stand on.”
If a parent lives by their word, following through every time, they will set what seems to be an impossible standard for their kid. Their kid is convinced of how virtuous one can be and aims to imitate this example themselves. It is much harder to follow this standard, though, than it is to agree this would be a good standard.
Patrick asks an interesting question: many parents are so hard on their children, and want them to become the best they can be, but how many of these parents are hard enough on themselves? Be hard on yourself as a parent, and the former will likely follow.
