Legendary rock band Metallica is getting a lot of buzz for its 11th studio album, 72 Seasons, which is expected to be released in April 2023. The announcement of a new album and a tour has fans excited. The problem is scammers are also excited and have created a convincing social media presence to make money.
Right now, scammers are promoting a Metallica crypto giveaway. Several fake youtube channels are promoting the rock band’s new album and tour with a live stream. According to Forbes, the live streams showcase past interviews from 2020 and 2021. The clickbait is a title claiming the group is playing songs from the new album. It could be the QR code that allows people to be duped. Several of the fake Metallica pages have them. However, a QR code is simple enough for anyone to make.
You may think everyone knows to be more cautious on the internet, but there are reports of fans already being duped. Reports show a Kansas man claims he was scammed out of $25,000 of Bitcoin from a fake youtube stream.
Metallica is warning fans after seeing the numerous reports of fans falling victim to thieves. The group says announcements will only be made on its official social media pages. Group members also say always look for official verification and to always report anything you believe is a scam.
