Maxim Australia has named transgender athlete Dani Laidley to its ‘Hot 100 Women’ list for 2023. The inclusion of Laidley, a biological male who was originally a football player, elicited an outpouring of criticism from social media users.

Laidley, ranked as 92nd on the list, was rated higher than reality TV stars Rebecca ‘Bec’ Judd and her sister Kate Twigley, who tied for 97th.
Laidley, 56, also beat Australian models Michelle Kimberlee and Molly Moyies. Actress Margot Robbie came in first place.
Dani Laidley, formerly “Dean,” was a coach in the Australian Football League before transitioning in 2020.

The publication, which is the sister magazine of its American counterpart, has annually released the ‘Hot 100’ list since 2012. Originally, the list was ranking women purely according to attractiveness. In recent years, the magazine has tried to rebrand the list to one that rates women based on accomplishments, personality, and career arcs. So, Maxim will probably try to defend itself by saying the word “Hot” in the title is supposed to be read as “topical” rather than “attractive.”

“Welcome to the 2023 Ultra Tune MAXIM HOT 100 – our annual, eclectic and definitive list of Australian women who have impressed, made headlines or simply had a huge year. The past 12 months saw an abundance of fine and fierce femmes who have wowed us with their aptitude, intellect, humour, attributes and overall incredible talents,” Maxim Australia Editor-in-Chief Santi Pintado said in the announcement.
However, a glance at the rest of the list leaves no confusion about whether attractiveness is still in the criteria, and it is quite obvious the magazine is trying to laud Laidley as a stunning lady. “The fact that most of the women in the top 10 are thin-framed or sporty is not lost on us,” wrote outlet Marie Claire.
