In a surprising turn of events on Tuesday, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene introduced articles of impeachment against a witness who was testifying before a House committee that she herself sits on.

During a House Oversight Committee hearing, the Georgia Republican vehemently criticized U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves of the D.C. District, who has been responsible for prosecuting and confining suspects involved in the events of January 6th.

According to the Western Journal, Greene specifically called out Graves for what she alleges is a failure to pursue charges based on existing federal laws. Instead, she claimed that he has focused more on prosecuting individuals who are accused of mere trespassing during the riot at the U.S. Capitol building.

She states that rather than using his authoritative powers to prosecute both local and federal cases, he instead solely focused on prosecuting Jan. 6 cases from one single day in our history” while declining to “prosecute 67 percent of those arrested in 2022.”

Furthermore, the congresswoman asserted that Graves has shown a lack of action in prosecuting those who committed crimes during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests in the city.

She also brought attention to several instances where the U.S. attorney’s office in D.C. appeared to be ineffective in pursuing violent criminals.

“Just yesterday morning, a little innocent 12-year-old girl was shot while sleeping in her own bed by another rampant, violent criminal who has probably been previously arrested and not prosecuted,” MTG said. She continued by questioning if the treatment of this case means less to city residents than “a grandma walking through the Capitol more than two years ago.”

To support her argument, Greene highlighted specific cases in which individuals who participated in the January 6th rally faced severe prosecution from Graves’ office. One such case involved Matthew Perna, who tragically took his own life after experiencing the aggressive legal actions taken against him.

“Matthew Lawrence Perna died on February 25, 2022 of a broken heart,” his family said in an obituary. “His community (which he loved), his country, and the justice system killed his spirit and his zest for life.” Greene noted that “The time for weaponizing the Department of Justice needs to come to an end.”

“Because you refuse to prosecute real criminals that are violating all the crimes here in Washington, D.C. … I am introducing articles of impeachment on you, Mr. Graves,” she said before then yielding back the remainder of her time.

It remains to be seen how these articles of impeachment introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene will be received by her colleagues in the House. This development adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing discussions and investigations surrounding the events of January 6th.
