Farm equipment supplier John Deere said this week that it will be eliminating almost all of its diversity, equity, and inclusion programs following widespread rejection of DEI principles by the company’s primarily conservative customer base. In addition to distancing itself from “external social or cultural awareness parades, festivals, or events,” the company also said that it will audit training materials to prioritize a quality-based workplace and “ensure the absence of socially-motivated messages.”

“Our customers’ trust and confidence in us are of the utmost importance to everyone at John Deere. We fully intend to earn it every day and in every way we can,” the company wrote on social media on Tuesday.

“Diversity quotas and pronoun identification have never been and are not company policy,” the statement continued. However, John Deere will still “continue to track and advance the diversity of our organization” based on the notion that a diverse workplace is best suited to meeting customer needs.
