On Friday night, President Joe Biden finally publicly recognized his seventh grandchild after more than four years of refusing to do so. The long-awaited acknowledgment of Hunter Biden’s daughter came as a part of a statement released to PEOPLE Magazine amid growing Republican criticism of the president’s silence on the subject.
Four-year-old Navy Joan Robert, the innocent child at the center of this major political dispute, is the daughter of the president’s son Hunter Biden and Lunden Roberts, a former stripper employed as Hunter’s personal assistant prior to Navy Joan’s birth in 2018. Hunter denied that the child was his until a court-ordered DNA test verified that he was indeed the father—and even then, he fought to avoid taking an active role in his daughter’s life.
Hunter was eventually ordered to pay child support after years of obstructing the litigation in Arkansas family court, although he succeeded in lowering the initially agreed-upon amount citing financial hardship. That case was finally settled in June on the condition that Roberts drop a suit to change her daughter’s last name to Biden.

In the four years since the child’s birth, President Biden has continued to ignore Navy Joan’s existence, insisting that he has six grandchildren, not seven, a seeming contradiction to his claims of being a dedicated family man. In one instance, seven Christmas stockings were displayed above the White House fireplace…but the seventh one belonged to the family dog.
But in the face of growing criticism for this denial ahead of the 2024 election, it seems President Biden is now reversing course. “Our son Hunter and Navy’s mother, Lunden, are working together to foster a relationship that is in the best interests of their daughter, preserving her privacy as much as possible going forward,” Biden told PEOPLE Magazine.
“This is not a political issue, it’s a family matter,” Biden continued. “Jill and I only want what is best for all of our grandchildren, including Navy.”
Hunter Biden is also a father to four children: daughters Naomi, 29, Finnegan, 22, and Maisy, 21, with ex-wife Kathleen Buhle, and son Beau Jr., 3, with his current wife, Melissa Cohen.
