As if the “distinct as the bodegas of the Bronx” or the “unique as the breakfast tacos from San Antonio” comments weren’t enough of a failed attempt to connect with the American people, First Lady Jill Biden strikes again.

On Monday, Biden said that she wanted to invite both LSU, who won the NCAA Women’s basketball championship and defeated Iowa to a reception at the White House. Biden was in attendance at the championship game and watched LSU’s 102-85 victory over Iowa in Dallas on Sunday night.

“I know we’ll have the champions come to the White House; we always do. So, we hope LSU will come,” she said. “But, you know, I’m going to tell Joe I think Iowa should come too because they played such a good game.”

LSU star Angel Reese tweeted a link to an ESPN story on Jill Biden’s request on Monday writing, “A JOKE,” paired with three rolling-on-the-floor-laughing emojis.

First Lady’s press secretary Vanessa Valdivia walked back on this invitation just a day later, but the damage was apparently already done. In a tweet on Tuesday, she clarified saying that Jill Biden “admires how far women have advanced in sports since the passing of Title IX,” and that “Her comments in Colorado were intended to applaud the historic game and all women athletes. She looks forward to celebrating the LSU Tigers on their championship win at the White House.”

Interesting comments were made by former White House aide turned TV political commentator, Keith Boykin, suggesting that if predominantly black LSU team had lost, the offer would not have been on the table for them to meet the president.

He tweeted, “No Ma’am! When Black women win a national championship, they should not be forced to share the stage with the losing team. Black women are the most loyal constituency of the Democratic Party. The White House needs to walk this back as soon as possible.”

No comments have been confirmed whether President Biden has agreed to the invitation.
