After much controversy surrounding country singer Jason Aldean’s “Try That In A Small Town” music video, the hit song shot up to number 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 list.

According to Luminate, the song hit 11.7 million on-demand audio and video streams between July 14 and July 20, marking a 1,000 percent increase from the previous week.

Prior to the music video being released, the song accounted for 987,000 streams in the United States. Digital song sales increased from 1,000 to 228,000 in those same weeks, respectively.

Previously reported by Valuetainment: The music video opens to Aldean standing outside the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee. Throughout the video, footage of the singer is cut together with clips of news reports showing carjackings, robberies, and the violent protests from the summer of 2020. In the wake of George Floyd’s death in police custody, mass riots, widespread looting, and “fiery but mostly peaceful protests” caused millions of dollars in property damage and claimed several lives.

Aldean responded to critics:

According to the Columbus Dispatch, Aldean mentioned that “cancel culture is a thing…which means try and ruin your life, ruin everything. One thing I saw this week was a bunch of country music fans that could see through a lot of the bulls—, all right?

When asked if he would sing the song live, Aldean responded: “The answer is simple. The people have spoken and you guys spoke very, very loudly,” before launching into the song backed by a supportive audience.
