Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of Donald Trump who played a prominent role as Senior Advisor in his administration, said he will not serve in the White House again should Trump win the 2024 election. Kushner is instead planning to focus on building his investment firm Affinity Partners, which was launched in 2021.

The former White House advisor described his future plans in an interview with Axios reporter Dan Primack at a public conference in Miami on Tuesday. His Affinity Partners is based in Miami and Kushner has been living there for some time.

“[My] desire at this phase in my life is to focus on my firm,” Kushner said. “I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity as a family to be out of the spotlight … and so we’ve both really enjoyed the opportunity to be down here in Florida with the kids.” Kushner did not completely rule out the prospect of a return to politics, adding that “nothing in my life has gone according to the plans I’ve set,” but said if Trump called him to offer a job, he would decline the opportunity.

Additionally, Kushner made it sound like Trump is in better hands now, saying the 2016 run “really was a family campaign” while now his 2024 campaign is “very professionally run.”

“I was very fortunate to play a role in the campaign and then join him in the administration,” he said. “I suspect that if he gets into office again, he would have just a level of competence and professionalism, even more so than it was in the last administration. … I think he has a much better understanding of who was effective and all these different roles and I suspect he’ll have a very, very long list of very qualified people to choose from.”

This news, if true, would no doubt bring joy to people in the protectionist and anti-war camp of the right epitomized by Steve Bannon, who called Kushner a “globalist” and a “cuck” and constantly fought with the young real estate scion in the early days of the administration. (Bannon would eventually lose this power struggle, getting booted from the White House in August 2017.)

However, there are rumors that Kushner will ultimately be offered a top position in the administration, as the Trump team is seeking loyalty above all else. Since Kushner still has an interest in Middle Eastern politics, Axios speculates Kushner could even be tapped for Secretary of State–an offer that would be hard for him to turn down.

There are also reports that Kushner used his diplomatic connections from his time in the Trump administration for profit. His Affinity firm is primarily backed by funds from the Saudi crown prince (who gave him an estimated $2 billion), gained through his relationships with the country’s leaders, and he reportedly met with Qatar’s Prime Minister and several Jewish billionaires in December 2023 to discuss the war with Hamas.
