On Friday, actor Jamie Foxx took to Instagram to update fans on his health following his mysterious hospitalization in April. Foxx, 55, did not reveal the precise cause of the medical emergency, but he stressed how serious the situation had been and explained why he avoided speaking out until now.

“I went through something that I thought I would never ever go through,” Foxx said in the video. “I know a lot of people were waiting, you know, wanting to hear updates, but to be honest with you, I just didn’t want you to see me like that, man. I want you to see me laughing, having a good time, partying, cracking a joke, doing a movie, television show. I didn’t want you to see me with tubes running out of me and…trying to figure out if I was going to make it through.”

As Valuetainment reported at the time, Foxx was rushed to the hospital after experiencing an “unknown medical complication.” Although his daughter, Corinne Marie Foxx, stated that he was “on his way to recovery,” the actor’s condition remained unknown for weeks afterward. In his video, Foxx thanked his daughter and his sister, Deidra Dixon, for their care and discretion. “Y’all know they kept it airtight. They didn’t let anything out. They protected me,” he said.

Foxx also directly addressed the speculation about the nature of his condition, specifically the report that he had been left paralyzed and blind after receiving a COVID-19 vaccination. “As you can see, my eyes are working just fine,” he joked, crossing his eyes. He also moved his arms to prove that he was not paralyzed. However, he admits that his condition was still serious. “I went to hell and back, and my road to recovery had some potholes as well,” he said. “But I’m coming back and I’m able to work so I want to thank people that let me work.”

“I’ve got my legs underneath, so you’re gonna see me out,” he continued. “But like I said, I just want you to remember me for the jokes that I crack, the movies that I make, some of them good, some of them ain’t.”

Then, after clarifying that he has also not been cloned during his absence—likely a reference to his upcoming Netflix film “They Cloned Tyrone,”—Foxx promised that he will be returning to public life before too long, thanking both God and his supporters for his recovery.

“I’m here on earth because of some great people,” he concluded. “I’m here on earth because of God, man. I love all y’all, I just wanted to jump on here and let you [know] that I’m on my way back.”
