John McAfee was a paranoid genius whose life was a bizarre, mysterious, and frenzied adventure. It looks like his afterlife is pretty much the same thing.
McAfee was the British-American computer whiz and businessman who made fortune and fame from inventing McAfee VirusScan. A company he eventually sold to Intel for north of $4 billion.
He was arrested in October 2020 in Spain for tax evasion charges. In June of 2021, it was reported that he hung himself inside a Spanish jail as he awaited extradition to the United States for more tax charges.
However, according to McAfee’s spurned ex-girlfriend, the iconic recluse is still alive; and living on the run in Texas.
The incredible twist to his already unfathomable life story was revealed because Netflix is airing a documentary Wednesday called “Running With the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee.” In the doc, McAfee’s Belizean ex-girlfriend Samantha Herrera says he faked his death, hightailed it to the U.S., and snuck into Texas.
Why is she saying this? It appears it’s because McAfee broke up with her as soon as he safely made it back to the U.S. Not only that, he married an ex-prostitute from Florida not long after dumping Herrera.
Is she bitter? It appears so, and she has good reason to be the way it seems because she had been dating McAfee since she was 18 and stuck with him for a decade as he dodged the authorities and death. He also persuaded Herrera to enlist the help of one of her family members, a prominent attorney who helped get McAfee back into the United States right before he broke things off with his now ex-girlfriend.
Here is part of what Herrera says in this explosive documentary about the tech mogul.
“His side of the story is that they’re after him because he didn’t pay off the government. They wanted to hurt him, to get rid of him.”
The New York Post was first to report that McAfee is still alive, which contradicts a report in Reuters on June 23 or this year that said the remains of McAfee remained in a Spanish morgue more than a year after his death because of a legal quagmire.
The Reuters report said an autopsy was conducted, and it determined that he died by suicide.
Herrera claims that McAfee paid off authorities to help fake his death.
The person behind the doc is director Charlie Russell, and he’s not sure what to make of Herrera’s story claiming McAfee is still alive.
Here is a quote from the Post story that he provided to Esquire.
“I don’t know what I think, and I don’t think she does. She says it, then she looks at the camera, and I can’t work out whether she thinks it’s real or not. She’s someone who was very angry at John.”
He promised them a life together, and I think they were genuinely in love, despite the huge age difference; I think he offered her a real different future, then he literally ditched her at the border, and I think that’s very painful for her and it’s taken her years to get over that.”
This might be the best piece of promotion for a single documentary in film history.
