President of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and the executive vice president of the Illinois Federation of Teachers Stacy Davis-Gates seems to be sending her son to De La Salle Institute despite being a vocal critic of private schooling.

Davis-Gates’ son was allegedly found listed on high school sports roster aggregator MaxPreps. The story was first reported on by SubX and later covered by ZeroHedge. De La Salle Institute is a private Catholic coeducational school in the South Side of Chicago; the student said to be her son was listed as a soccer player for the 2023 season.

The admin of a CTU private Facebook group reportedly criticized Davis-Gates’ apparent decision to send her son to private school.

This action directly contradicts Davis-Gates’ claim made during a 2020 webinar panel that her “children go to the Chicago public school” which she at the time said helps “to legitimize my space within the coalition but also helps to amplify my voice as a leader in labor because a white dude whose kids go to school in the suburbs can’t really have that same voice in the same way.”

Davis-Gates is a frequent and hostile opponent of private schools and school choice, a system which she has labelled “racist,” saying private schools are “segregation academies” with “racist origins.”

As seen in the screenshots above, Davis-Gates repeatedly criticized school choice, using research from the wealthy and powerful Center for American Progress, a Democratic Party-aligned think tank. The union she presides over also claimed school choice has a racist history:

The CTU has advocated for the elimination of a Chicago school choice scholarship program that helps low-income students opt out of the public school system. The union is known for its history of flamboyant comments, such as when it tweeted that the push to reopen schools after the height of the COVID pandemic in December of 2020 was “rooted in sexism, racism and misogyny,” a post which it has since deleted.

According to the right-of-center American Enterprise Institute (AEI), 39% of Chicago Public School Teachers enroll their own kids in private schools, three times more than the national average. Public school teachers are the main constituents of teachers unions like the CTU.
