Dan Simmons explains that growing up he wasn’t wealthy, but he was so over‑scheduled with three sports, school, work, and church on Sundays that he “didn’t even have time to make bad decisions.”
He says things went off the rails when he got to college and that structure disappeared, and he jokes that he started “sampling bad decisions” so hard he became a heroin addict, telling people who’ve never tried cocaine, “Don’t worry, I tried it for you—it smells so good, obviously.”
