UNITE HERE, the country’s largest hospitality workers’ union, threw its support behind Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday, saying her history of supporting unions outweighs former President Donald Trump’s efforts to woo over hotel and restaurant workers by promising to eliminate taxes on tips.

According to UNITE HERE president Gwen Mills, Trump was merely “making a play” for votes from hospitality workers, while Harris “has credibility from having supported unions.”

Trump made his suggestion during a June 7 campaign rally in Nevada. “To those hotel workers and people who get tips, you are going to be very happy, because when I get to office, we are going to not charge taxes on tips, people making tips,” he said.

Rather than embracing Trump’s proposal that tips be excluded from taxable income, the union agrees with the Biden-Harris administration’s assessment that tipped workers would be better off with a higher minimum wage.

The endorsement for Harris comes with a promise to have union members begin an expansive door-knocking campaign across multiple swing states.
