Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sparked a fierce online backlash on Thursday after commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day by drawing a comparison between former President Donald Trump and Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, suggesting that both men have equally threatened democracy.

“Eighty years ago today, thousands of brave Americans fought to protect democracy on the shores of Normandy,” she wrote on X. “This November, all we have to do is vote.”

Likely anticipating the reaction her remarks would cause, Clinton immediately locked down the comments section on her post.

The D-Day invasion of German-occupied France on June 6, 1944, marked a critical turning point in World War II. The aftermath of the bloody landing on the beaches of Normandy took the lives of 4,414 American troops, nearly 12,000 Allied soldiers, and as many as 20,000 Germans. Under a hail of machine gun rounds and mortar fire, Allied forces slowly fought their way up the beach and began the process of liberating Europe from Nazi control.

But according to Clinton, the threat of Nazi tyranny is rivaled only by the one posed by Donald Trump’s reelection campaign, and the historic displays of bravery on D-Day are on par with casting a ballot in a voting booth—an act that, notably, does not usually involve heavy artillery.

The backlash from conservative political figures social media users was one of immediate and overwhelming outrage.

“These Dems couldn’t be more dramatic and deranged,” wrote Senator Tommy Tuberville. “They’re comparing storming the beaches of Normandy on D-Day to voting against Trump.”

“How disrespectful to our WWII heroes who faced unimaginable fear with immense courage 80 years ago today,” Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) wrote.

Others called attention to Clinton’s own notably un-democratic activities during her 2016 campaign against Trump.

“In 2016 you attempted to undo everything they fought for by partnering with Fusion GPS to launder discredited oppo[sition] in the press, and merchandise it into surveillance warrants on enemies through FISA,” conservative commentator Dana Loesch wrote. “Were my WWII vet grandparents alive today they’d slam this.”

Thursday’s remarks are far from the first time Clinton has subtly or directly compared former President Trump to Adolf Hitler. In May, she referred to Trump as “Grifter Hitler” after a Trump campaign staffer reposted a fan-made video that appeared to show the former president alongside a World War II-era newspaper clip referencing a “unified Reich.”
