I think it’s safe to say that the creator of the 4/20 holiday must be one of the 3 names listed – Cheech Marin, Tommy Chong or Snoop Dogg.

Who else could it be, right? Regardless, April 20, referred to as “4/20,” is a holiday trend created by American marijuana smokers – although it has not officially been declared a legal holiday.

However, Cannabis companies such as High Tide, Canopy Growth and Trulieve Cannabis Corp. rev up promotions, showering their customers with exclusive deals and discounts. The industry continues to face major scrutiny from lawmakers in the United States, even though the businesses have had a steady customer base.

According to Business Wire, the Massachusetts Cannabis Company declared 4/20 an employee holiday back in March.

“4/20 is a day to show appreciation, love and respect for cannabis and its power to help amplify the health and happiness that people experience in their daily lives,” said Sian Leininger, Director of Retail and Customer Engagement at Temescal Wellness. “For us, it’s a day to celebrate our employees, whose passion, knowledge and true dedication inspires their unparalleled service to our customers and our community all of the other days of the year.”

According to seasonality data from BDSA (cannabis data firm), cannabis retailers see a spike in sales on Thursdays compared to Tuesday or Wednesdays. BDSA said that with 4/20 landing on a Thursday this year, they are expected to see a major rise in sales.

“With stiff competition and the illicit market threatening the growth of legal adult-use cannabis markets, cannabis brands must leverage key holidays like 4/20 to simply reinforce the message about what they do best,” said Andy Palalas, chief revenue officer at High Tide.

Be safe and HAPPY 4/20, folks!
