Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg has been charged a second time for disobeying a police order to leave a protest at a busy port in Sweden. Thunberg was arrested and charged just months after she was convicted for the same offense in Southern Sweden where the 20-year-old refused to leave a site in the southern city of Malmo.

Thunberg told reporters at the Malmö district court that it was “absurd that those who act in line with science should pay the price for it”. When asked if she would be more cautious after the fine, she said that climate protesters were “definitely not going to back down.”

This time, Thunberg was ordered to leave the scene of an anti-fossil fuel protest that blockaded a port in Malmo earlier in the year. She was ordered to pay a small fine of 2,500 Swedish Krona (roughly $224), despite reports claiming that she would potentially be facing jail time for the offense.

“The demonstration did not have a permit and it led to the blocking of car traffic. The woman refused to obey the police command to leave the scene,” the prosecutor said in a statement.

The latest charges against her came as Thunberg joined forces with the Global Climate Strike 2023 – a youth-driven protest movement set to take place in over 50 countries worldwide over the weekend.

During protests this past summer, Thunberg said, “The climate crisis is a matter of life and death for countless people. We choose to physically stop fossil fuel infrastructure. We are reclaiming the future.”

Thunberg went to Instagram to share her thoughts: “Today, we have a global climate strike with people all over the world taking part, demanding that we end fossil fuels.”

The activist’s second trial in Sweden will be held on September 27th.
