A day of massive celebration honored and practiced by close to 3 billion people worldwide deserves recognition from high-tech search engines like Google and Bing, right? Folks over at Google didn’t seem to think so.

Yesterday was Easter – not just an American holiday marketed in the form of a bunny, egg hunts, and bright, colorful décor – it is more importantly celebrated as the resurrection of Jesus Christ in the Christian faith.

This global honor dates back more than 2,000 years with Christianity being the United States’ foundational religion.

People took to Twitter to share their disappointment with Google Doodles, a creative series commemorating innovators, celebrities, social movements, religions, historical figures, and more.

Questions were raised when folks came to the Google homepage and saw no Google Doodle for Easter. Other religious celebrations have been honored including Hannukah, Ramadan and Kwanza, so why not Easter?

Tweets posted sharing their thoughts:

Some people went to the search engine and asked, “What holiday is today?” Google’s answer was a new form of a slap in the face to the most important holiday in the faith – Google answered with National Chicken Little Awareness Day.

According to a 2022 report from Open Doors USA, roughly 5,600 Christians were murdered for their Christian faith in 2021, with more than 6,000 detained or imprisoned and another 4,000 kidnapped. In addition, more than 5,000 churches and other religious facilities have been destroyed.

Christianity is the most persecuted faith in the world, yet this very real statistic seems to go unnoticed. With the recent school shooting in the Nashville Covenant elementary school and the constant social persecution American Christians have been facing in recent years, it would seem fitting to show allegiance and support during these times – so why hasn’t Google?

Maybe this call-out will help them think differently next year; one can only hope.
