Georgia state lawmakers called for an emergency session of the General Assembly to review the actions of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Republicans in the State House and Senate, led by Rep. Colton Moore, intend to conduct the inquiry with an eye on impeaching Willis for her ongoing prosecution of former President Donald Trump.

Late on Monday, a grand jury in Fulton County voted to indict Donald Trump and 18 associates for their efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. As Valuetainment previously reported, District Attorney Fani Willis alleges that Trump knowingly pushed the false narrative that he had won the election and pressured Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to disregard the legitimate results.

Trump and his alleged co-conspirators are accused of solicitation of violation of oath by a public officer, conspiracy to commit filing false documents, and violating the Georgia Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.

To many Republicans, this indictment—the fourth one brought against Trump in the last six months—is little more than a political attack against the current GOP frontrunner. Willis’ critics further accuse her of criminalizing free speech based on parts of the indictment that claim Trump telling supporters to watch One America News or calling Vice President Mike Pence a “wimp” furthered a conspiracy.

In response, Rep. Colton Moore is calling on Governor Kemp to authorize the special assembly to “strip all funding and, if appropriate, impeach Fani Willis.”

We, the undersigned, being duly elected members of the Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia Senate, and comprising 3/5 of each respective house, pursuant to Article IV, Section II, Paragraph VII(b), hereby certify to you, in writing, with a copy to the Secretary of State, that in our opinion an emergency exists in the affairs of the state, requiring a special session to be convened under that section, for all purposes, to include, without limitation, the review and response to the actions of Fani Willis.

Governor Kemp previously signed state Senate Bill 92 in May which allows for the removal of elected district attorneys based on mental/physical incapacity, willful misconduct, moral failings, or dereliction of duty, among other factors. The law established a Prosecuting Attorneys’ Statewide Qualifications Commission granted the authority to impeach.

However, at this point, it is unclear whether Kemp will cooperate with the effort. On Tuesday, the governor posted a response to Trump’s election fraud claims by stating “The 2020 election in Georgia was not stolen.”

In light of the governor’s contentious relationship with former President Trump, it remains to be seen whether he will assist in efforts to prevent the prosecution.

DA Willis has given Trump and his fellow defendants until noon on Friday, August 25 to voluntarily surrender themselves to the Fulton County Jail for processing.
