Two former Tesla employees are facing a lawsuit from the electric vehicle maker over the leak of the “Tesla Files” released earlier this year.

Back in May, German media outlet Handelsblatt informed Tesla that it obtained confidential information about current and former Tesla employees, including names and contact information. According to the offices in Brandenburg – home of Tesla’s European major factory, the data leak was massive.

Between 2019 and 2022, groups of Tesla employees privately shared via internal messaging system, “highly invasive” videos and images recorded by customers’ car cameras, according to interviews by Reuters with nine former employees.

The data of approximately 75,753 individuals was compromised in a Tesla hack, claiming the potential $3.3 billion fine was the result of an inside job.

Dubbed as the “Tesla Files,” the company announced it filed the appropriate legal action against two former employees. Electronic devices from both workers were seized as well and the company obtained court orders that prevent them from sharing leaked information any further.

Per the company’s notice submitted to the Maine Attorney General’s Office, “Tesla cooperated with law enforcement and external forensics experts and will continue to take appropriate steps as necessary.”

The notice added: “We also arranged resources to determine what data was involved and identify potentially affected individuals. As discussed below, we recently confirmed that certain employee-related records were among the confidential information affected as part of this incident.”

According to the Guardian, salaries of employees, customers’ bank details, private production details – even founder and CEO Elon Musk’s social security number were among the compromised data leaked.
