Ford Motor Co. announced a significant reduction in its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives on Wednesday, including the decision to cease participation in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index. CEO Jim Farley emphasized the need to adapt to the evolving social and legal environment, acknowledging the diverse beliefs of employees and customers.

“We are mindful that our employees and customers hold a wide range of beliefs,” Farley wrote. “The external and legal environment related to political and social issues continues to evolve.”

This shift aligns Ford with other corporations like Lowe’s and Harley-Davidson, which have also scaled back their DEI commitments amid pressure from conservative activists. The changes include the elimination of hiring quotas and a reconfiguration of employee resource groups to focus on professional development and community service, accessible to all employees.

Farley stated that the company would prioritize its resources towards customer and community care rather than engaging with polarizing issues. This trend reflects a broader corporate retreat from DEI policies following recent Supreme Court rulings and public scrutiny.
