Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) said “America is not sending their best and brightest, you know, to Washington, D.C.” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

“Sometimes you literally just can’t believe,” he continued, “like, you know, these people are making the decisions that are, you know, determining, the, the government here. It’s actually scary.”

Many found Fetterman’s comments ironic, as Fetterman is widely perceived as not being competent himself. “Does he own a mirror,” creator of Libs of TikTok Chaya Raichik wrote on X.

Colbert had teed-up the response with a question: “Well, speaking of people who need help, the House of Representatives is a mess. Do senators feel pretty good right now that they’re not the most dysfunctional part of the government?”

“Well, it’s a low bar! No, I mean really,” Fetterman replied. “I just want everyone to realize just how truly dysfunctional it really is. I always tell people, “Don’t worry, please don’t worry, it’s much worse than you think.”

Fetterman also caused the Senate dress code to be abolished due to his insistence on wearing sweatshirts and shorts, which was subsequently reinstated after complaints. “I never asked for it!” Fetterman said on Colbert. “But I was really struck by [the response]: “Oh my god, the world is gonna burn because he’s gonna wear a hoodie on the [Senate] floor!”” Fetterman said the Ukraine War and the threat of government shutdowns are more important than dress codes.

Fetterman also discussed some other topics, such as his health. “You know, nearly dying is a major downer,” he joked, referring to his stroke that found him hospitalized on the campaign trail. He said the usefulness of communications-aiding technology he received after his stroke turned him into a disability rights advocate.

“I can see how being more empathetic would make you a better senator,” Colbert said. “But how does it feel to have your private health become public news?”

Fetterman replied it was part of the job, and then made fun of conspiracy theories that he has a body double (one current theory from the comment section-sphere is that he, in fact, has six)
