You’re probably preparing to create the masterpiece of Halloween costumes. If you are, we’re anxiously waiting to see your viral creation, but remember it’s only one night. Not looking your best is okay for the occasion but remember you must wake up with your real face the next morning. That’s why dermatologists and beauty experts are offering some dos and don’ts before you apply your costume makeup.

Experts spoke with the DailyMail to give pointers on how to avoid your worst nightmare, acne or an allergic reaction the day after. Experts Dr. Fernanda Sakamoto, celebrity esthetician, Renee Rouleau, and Dr. Sandra Lee aka Dr. Pimple Popper spoke with DailyMail and gave this advice.

  • First make sure to avoid ingredients like silicones, PEGs, phthalates, EDTAs, fragrances, and dyes like FD&C Blue No. 1. The experts say make that list before applying any type of makeup or paint. Do not use any makeup that contains the ingredients listed above. Avoid heavy oils unless you want a breakout the next day.
  • The next tip is a do. Do prep your skin ahead of Halloween by using SPF and use hydrating products that work as a skin barrier. If you don’t normally keep your skin hydrated or use SPF, you may want to reconsider wearing makeup this Halloween.
  • Third, never reuse last year’s makeup. If you’re using your everyday makeup to create a Halloween mask, it’s fine. Do not pull out last year’s Halloween make-up kit to put on your face. While you could save money, the next day will be bad for your skin. Old makeup can contain bacteria and cause acne and infections. Now that’s scary.
  • Last, no matter how crazy the night gets always remove your make-up before going to bed. Experts suggest removing your Halloween makeup with a double cleansing routine. Start with an oil-based cleaner, balm, or lotion. Then end with moisturizer.
