Congressional Democrats are reportedly expressing concern about President Joe Biden’s upcoming State of the Union address on Thursday night, uncertain of whether he will be able to overcome questions about his advanced age. As the 81-year-old executive prepares to appear on Capitol Hill—which is once again surrounded by a precautionary security fence—members of his party are anxiously assessing his “ability to speak without blowing things.”

Ahead of the State of the Union, President Biden is facing dismal approval ratings and public scrutiny over how his age may be affecting his job performance. As Valuetainment previously reported, a recent poll indicated that upwards of 61 percent of voters think that Biden is too old to hold the presidency for a second term. This was further compounded by a report from the president’s own Department of Justice (DOJ) that labeled him “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory” who could not stand trial for mishandling classified documents.

In light of these factors, lawmakers within Biden’s party are stressing the importance of the president delivering a solid and coherent address.

“We are all nervous,” one House Democrat told Axios, citing concerns about his “ability to speak without blowing things.”

Another representative told the outlet that party insiders are already anticipating mistakes in the speech. “Listen, Trump has made rhetorical slips,” the lawmaker said. “Biden is going to make rhetoric slips, I think the key is his energy level.”

Democratic strategist Doug Sosnik emphasized that, “given concerns about Biden’s age, his delivery will be as important as his substance.”

Internet betting forum BetOnline has already set up a plethora of prop bets about the speech, allowing viewers to make wagers on Biden having “five second brain freeze,” “confusing Nikki Haley with anyone else,” and the likelihood that he would “mis-name a foreign leader or country.”

According to early outlines of the president’s speech, the State of the Union will focus on raising corporate tax rates, cutting middle-class taxes, and trimming national debt. Key campaign issues including abortion access and immigration will also take center stage as Biden makes his case for a second term.

In what many are calling an ironic, possibly hypocritical move, the grounds of Capitol Hill have been secured with the metal security fencing that has been set up periodically since the January 6th riot. The barrier, meant to keep threats away from the Capitol, stands in stark contrast to Biden’s border policies, which have stopped construction on barriers at the US-Mexico border since he took office.

President Joe Biden’s 2024 State of the Union Speech will begin at 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 7th.
