Following Thursday’s presidential debate, Democrats worried about the prospects of the Biden campaign are considering candidates for his replacement.

On NBC News, Chuck Todd said, “I’ve been talking to a lot of leaders in the Democratic Party—elected [officials], coalition leaders—there’s a full-on panic about this performance. Not like ‘oh this is recoverable,’ this is more of a, ‘okay, he’s got to step aside.’ there’s a lot of that chatter.”

On MSNBC, anchor Nicolle Wallace added, “There is a conversation happening inside Biden’s circle, and certainly a much more frank conversation happening inside the Democratic coalition. I think there will be stories of a lot of concern.” She further added that the “conversations range from whether he should be in this race tomorrow morning to what was wrong with him.”

Technically speaking, Democrats can replace their candidate at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August. While Joe Biden has won the race in primary elections, if he was no longer running, electors would be freed to support another candidate. Many prominent names have been speculated to be potential replacements for Biden, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.

Gavin Newsom entered politics by an appointment to San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors in 1997 and eventually became Mayor of San Francisco in 2004. He was elected Lieutenant Governor in 2010 and won re-election in 2014. In 2018, he won California’s gubernatorial election and won re-election in 2022. Newsom also survived a recall election in 2021, following criticism for his handling of state policy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Months ago, he received criticism due to a company he owns in California offering new workers $16 an hour, while a new state law he signed raises the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20 an hour.

Gretchen Whitmer served in both houses of the Michigan legislature before being elected Governor in 2018. Whitmer and Newsom were noted as having relatively strict lockdown policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. She delivered the 2020 Democratic response to President Trump’s State of the Union address, a position usually used to give exposure to a rising star in the Democratic Party.

J.B. Pritzker is a member of the Pritzker family known for founding the Hyatt hotel chain. Pritzker was a venture capitalist and private equity investor before becoming Governor of Illinois in 2018. He won re-election in 2022, despite critics wary of his strict lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Josh Shapiro began his political career as a Congressional staffer before getting elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2004. While serving as Pennsylvania Attorney General, he launched an investigation into child sexual abuse cases in the Catholic Church. The investigation resulted in an 884-page grand jury report that detailed the names of sexual predators and gave recommendations for changes to state law. He was elected Governor of the state in 2022.
