Dave Chappelle held at surprise show Thursday evening at the SF Masonic Auditorium where he blasted the city: ‘What the f— happened to this place?” The comedian criticized the California city’s widespread homeless crisis and claimed that all of San Francisco now resembles the notoriously gritty Tenderloin district.

The 49-year-old who refers to the city as his “second home” went on to recount a situation he experienced a few nights prior to the show. The comedian told his audience that a homeless person defecated in front of him near the entrance of an Indian restaurant as he was walking in for dinner.

“Y’all [expletive] need a Batman!” the comic exclaimed.

Chappelle’s witnessing of public defecation is so common that an app called “Snapcrap” was developed in 2018 which makes it simple for people to report used needles and human feces on the streets of the city.

“See something gross? Just snap a photo and press submit,” reads the app’s description. The pics are then transmitted to San Francisco’s Public Works department, which has its own 311 app to report feces, trash, graffiti, and potholes.

Chappelle’s disproval falls on the heels of the city’s sharp increase in homelessness and crime. Representing a 35 percent rise since 2019, it’s estimated that 38,000 people are inhabiting the streets of San Francisco on any given day.

Exacerbated by a shortage of law enforcement, the San Francisco Police Department has experienced a 12 percent decrease in full-duty officers from 2019 to 2022.
