Ultraprogressive Congressman Greg Casar (D-TX), who is affiliated with “The Squad” and who voted to defund the Austin Police Department when he was a member of the city council, is now requesting a police patrol at his home from the very same department.

Not one week ago he was slamming the department for their alleged “racist” practices.

“It’s come to our attention that Anti police king of the defund movement in Austin @GregCasar who only last week called APD an agency with racist practices has requested enhanced patrols around his house for the next week,” the Austin Police Retired Officers Association said.

“We want everyone to feel safe,” their post went on, “But this seems to us as the height of hypocrisy from the congressman. Maybe he should hire private security like his fellow squad members do. Sure seems like he wants the police in his neighborhood just not yours.”

Casar was a member of Austin’s city council in 2020, during which time he successfully led the “defund the police” charge against the police department. “We did it!!” he celebrated on Twitter in August 2020. “Austin City Council just reduced APD’s budget by over $100 million *and* reinvested resources into our community’s safety and well-being. Tens of thousands of you have called, emailed, and testified. You made the impossible into a reality.”

Then, on Dec. 15th of this year, Greg Casar’s office sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice requesting a federal investigation into the Austin Police Department citing “serious concerns” of racist practices. It claims that “multiple studies” have indicated a “high rate of police killings” and “racial disparity” in police responses, and called for “systemic reforms” of the Department’s policies due to the alleged prevalence of “excessive and lethal use of force” especially “against communities of color,” “racial discrimination, and discrimination against people with mental health conditions.”

But now those things don’t seem to matter, as Casar has requested more police protection from the Austin Police Department at his private residence, which he filed through the United States Capitol Police in Washington, D.C.

This double-standard provoked backlash among many. “So @GregCasar believes APD is a racist institution that requires DOJ oversight but then requests more APD patrols around his house,” said Austin personal injury attorney Adam Loewy. “Interesting juxtaposition.”

“Greg Casar is a fraud,” Texas GOP operative Matt Mackowiak posted on X.

DASH, a filmmaking collaborative which makes documentaries about Austin, torched the lawmaker for his work in the city. “Greg Casar, the man who has hurt the City of Austin more than any one man other than maybe Adler is now calling for the DOJ to step in because our cops are “racist,” they love to kill people and are all around bad people. This is why we are hundreds of officers short and why morale is at an all time low. Would you put your life in the line just to be shit on by politicians?”
