A 19-year-old Chinese international student at the University of Michigan has been charged with multiple election-related crimes after illegally registering to vote and casting a ballot in Ann Arbor. The charges include unauthorized elector attempting to vote and perjury for making a false affidavit to secure voter registration.
Despite the ballot being illegally cast, it will be counted due to the inability to track individual ballots once processed.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit emphasized that noncitizen voting is extremely rare and assured that the case was swiftly referred to law enforcement.
This incident has sparked a separate investigation by the Michigan Attorney General’s office, underscoring the seriousness with which such cases are handled to maintain election integrity. Authorities have reiterated that only U.S. citizens are eligible to vote and that violations will result in prosecution.
