The results are in for the city who gets to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention. Las Vegas and Atlanta were also in the mix, but the DNC chose a solidly blue state instead, perhaps forgoing an opportunity to create economic investment in a swing state that could help the Dems keep that state in their column.

Chicago is an interesting choice, especially in comparison with Las Vegas, where crime hasn’t shot up dramatically. In Chicago, 2021 was the worst year for murders since the mid 1990’s.

And with the Chicago mayoral race, the Dems may not have the best face to feature at their convention. Typically, if the mayor of the convention host city belongs to the same party, they’ll get an opportunity to make a major speech there. The election for Chicago’s mayor happened just last week, where hard left liberal Brandon Johnson surprisingly took home the gold in the mayoral runoff.

He’s even to the left of the last Chicago mayor, Lori Lightfoot. Lightfoot at least took on the Chicago teacher’s union, Brandon Johnson, a former teacher, owes his career to them. Paul Vallas, the guy who lost, had been hired to advocate for charter schools for various cities across the country. He also wanted to add more police, while Johnson has pledged not to, and previously, even was an advocate to dramatically slash their budget.

This creates and awkward image for the DNC. Had Vallas won, he would have presented a path palpable to independent minded voters. Vallas speaking on the stage would project that even in liberal Chicago, there are moderate, level headed Democrats. Instead, the man repping Chicago will have the most radical policy talking points to date.

Congrats to the Dems for shooting themselves in the foot.
