California Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber rejected a call to remove former President Donald Trump from the 2024 primary election ballot. Weber did not immediately comment on the decision, which was announced in the form of a list of certified candidates released by her office.

Weber was propositioned to decide on the matter by Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis last week.

At first, Weber, herself a Democrat, replied with a vague letter in which she refused to affirm or deny the calls, stating her office would be guided in the decision-making process through its “commitment to and respect for the rule of law.”

She went on: “While we can agree that the attack on the Capitol and the former President’s involvement was abhorrent, there are complex legal issues surrounding this matter.”

Weber made it clear that she did consider Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment in her decision—the clause cited by Colorado and Maine in their rulings to bar Trump from their states’ ballots. Ultimately, this line of reasoning did not sway her.

Many high-ranking Democratic politicians in California voiced their support for Kounalakis’ position. On the other hand, Governor Gavin Newsom publicly discouraged the idea, arguing that Trump should be soundly defeated in the election instead.
