Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is recovering in intensive care after undergoing successful emergency surgery in São Paulo to drain a brain hematoma caused by a fall in October. Lula, 79, had hit his head in a bathroom accident, which resulted in a subdural hematoma that was detected after he experienced severe headaches.

The surgery, described as a craniotomy, was performed at the Sírio-Libanês hospital without complications, and Lula is currently stable and well under monitoring.

This medical emergency forced Lula to cancel his participation in the BRICS Summit in Russia, as he had been advised to avoid long-haul flights.

A press conference by his medical team is expected to provide further updates on his condition.

Lula had previously sustained a head injury from the fall, which required stitches and prompted regular MRI scans to monitor for complications.
