The Joint Chief of Staff role is a significant one. They serve as the principle advisor to the Nation Security Council and Secretary of Defense. They’re the president’s top military advisor.

General C.Q. Brown is currently the Air Force chief of staff, and he’d be the second black person in the new post. Colin Powell was the first.

Brown certainly cuts a leftward bend, saying he dealt with racism while in the military. He said his experience “didn’t always ring of liberty and equality.”

He recalls being questioned if he was actually a pilot, presumably because he was black.

And he’s certainly going to have a mission if confirmed. “I can’t fix centuries of racism in our country, nor can I fix decades of discrimination, but let me know how together, we can make a difference.”

While Brown’s appointment seems likely, it’ll be interesting to see if he turns his position into a racial justice advocacy post. Time will tell.
