Former President Donald Trump did not spend Tuesday night crying, whining, or hiding out in one of the dozens of closets at Mar A Lago — he went straight to a “candlelight dinner” fundraiser for his campaign that raised over $2 million.
According to a Politico report, some of his top donors and campaign bundlers were on hand. Trump spoke briefly and sat at a table with Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama. The event shows that even with a mountain of legal issues facing Trump, he still can draw a crowd and get people to write checks. The 37 felony charges are a significant obstacle to a return to the White House, but his appearance at this event at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, shows he’s not backing out of the race.
Trump went on the attack against special counsel Jack Smith, the Biden appointee overseeing the federal probe into Trump’s handling of classified documents. He vowed that if he regains the Presidency in 2024, he will “go after” Joe Biden.
The cost of getting in the door was $1,000, and guests included Kimberly Guilfoyle, the finance of Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr.
Wednesday is Trump’s 77th birthday. Despite the chaos surrounding him with multiple legal issues, Trump still has a commanding lead in early polls for the 2024 GOP presidential primary. For the most part, his supporters have defended Trump and accused the Justice Department of being politically motivated in their quest to ensure Trump is a non-factor in the 2024 election.
