The American Medical Association (AMA) recently suggested taxpayers fund uterus transplants for transgender women in efforts to make them feel more woman-like.

Critics have called out the AMA for its “activist position” after recently floating the idea of taxpayers paying the bills for biological men to receive a uterus transplant. The AMA’s Journal of Ethics presented the idea back in June, listing each transplant costing between $100,000 to up to $300,000.

According to the Washington Examiner, the first successful uterine transplant was conducted on a biological woman in Sweden back in 2013.

The National Library of Medicine conducted a study in 2021 on the perceptions and motivations for uterus transplants for men identifying as women. Results concluded 94 percent of the 182 transgender women studied believed the ability to birth children “would enhance perceptions of their femininity.” 88 percent of respondents believed the ability to menstruate would add to this perception.

“The survey responses suggest that transgender women would choose to have female physiologic experiences, such as menstruation and gestation, as well as potentially having a physiologically functioning transplanted vagina,” the study concluded.

Fox News medical contributor Dr. Marty Makary questioned the association, asking why it is not utilizing its resources into research focused on the complications surrounding gender-affirming treatment.

“It is odd that the AMA is choosing to really focus on this activist position rather than fund the important research we need in transgender medicine,” Makary told Ainsley Earhardt Wednesday. “What’s the regret rate after transition surgery? What’s the long-term complication rate of hormones?”

“Those studies are not being done. Instead of funding those studies, they’ve chosen to take an activist position,” Makary said. “And it’s very hard to do research in this field, Ainsley, because the activists have run a lot of people out of town, that reasonable doctors and objective scientists have been run out of town. Even recently, Mayo and Jefferson have fired people over simply suggesting that we need better research.”

The AMA is the third largest lobbying organization in the United States, with doctors standing to benefit financially from every surgery. Some medical professionals within the AMA now actively believe that people should be able to simply choose their gender regardless of physiology.
