Chinese migrants are increasingly entering America’s southern border illegally as they flee their country for economic reasons.

Chinese people were the fourth-highest nationality (after Venezuelans, Ecuadorians, and Haitians) making up the crossings of the Darien Gap in Panama en route to the United States, according to Panama’s immigration authorities. These statistics cover the first nine months of 2023.

The Associated Press interviewed a 28-year-old man, Deng Guangsen, who had begun a two month-long journey that began in China’s Guangdong province and ended in San Diego. He traversed seven countries by foot, bus, and plane, including the dangerous jungles of Panama.

The route through the Darien Gap is allegedly being promoted on social media. According to Chinese migrants interviewed by the AP, they are seeking better economic prospects and a less authoritarian political system.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection statistics show a 21 percent increase of southwest migrant crossing arrests between August and September 2023, from 181,084 to 218,763. September came in second behind an all-time high of 222,018 in December 2022.

The United Nations has projected that China will lose some 300,000 people this year compared to 120,000 in 2012.

The term “runxue” is increasingly being used to describe the phenomenon. Meaning “moisture” in Chinese but sounding similar to the English word “run,” the term was originally used in relation to evading censorship but is now being used to describe citizens fleeing the Chinese government.

“This wave of emigration reflects despair toward China,” said Cai Xia, editor-in-chief of outlet Yibao and a former professor at the Central Party School of the Chinese Communist Party in Beijing.

“They’ve lost hope for the future of the country […] You see among them the educated and the uneducated, white-collar workers, as well as small business owners, and those from well-off families.”
