A major cybersecurity issue led to the shutdown of some casino and hotel computer systems at MGM Resorts International properties across the United States.

MGM Resorts International, which boasts approximately 48,000 rooms within its Las Vegas properties, including renowned establishments like Mandalay Bay, the Bellagio, Luxor and MGM Grand has fallen victim to this unexpected cyber intrusion.

The outage began Sunday night, greatly affecting company operations including email systems, reservation processes, electronic room keys – even the functionality of casino slot machines.

Guests staying at MGM Resorts along the bustling Las Vegas Strip found themselves locked out of their hotel accommodations due to a recent cyber-attack. The attack seemed to extend beyond Las Vegas, affecting other MGM properties, including the Borgata in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and the Biloxi-based establishments in Mississippi.

MGM Resorts released a statement on Monday, acknowledging the cyber threat by stating, “MGM Resorts recently identified a cybersecurity issue affecting some of the Company’s systems. Promptly after detecting the issue, we quickly began an investigation with assistance from leading external cybersecurity experts.”

They added: “We also notified law enforcement and took prompt action to protect our systems and data, including shutting down certain systems. Our investigation is ongoing, and we are working diligently to determine the nature and scope of the matter.”

MGM, a key employer in the state of Nevada and the primary proprietor of casinos along the Strip, has been forced to direct potential guests to call for reservations as their website remains inaccessible. The situation has also impacted ATMs and credit card machines, forcing on-site restaurants to accept only cash payments while temporarily suspending room charges.

A post on the company website said the site was down. It listed telephone numbers to reach the reservation system and properties. No specificities have been announced but according to the statement, efforts towards protecting data included “shutting down certain systems.” The investigation remains ongoing.
