Weight loss mogul Jenny Craig may be closing their corporate offices as early as Friday as part of a transition to e-commerce, according to ABC News.
Initially, Jenny Craig reported having notified employees of its plans to close its Carlsbad company site in California, which houses all of its corporate offices.
Their efforts include ending the bulk of operations on or around June 24 but concluded that if it cannot secure the financing needed to continue operations, then the facility may close as early as May.
It was then reported on Tuesday that a closing may be happening as early as this upcoming Friday.
A huge factor to Jenny Craig’s recent downfall may be due to the increasing demand for weight loss drugs including Ozempic. Competitors like WeightWatchers bought a digital health firm offering virtual appointments with doctors who can prescribe these drugs.
However, there is currently not enough data on long-term side effects of such drugs used strictly for weight loss unless the patients were obese.
‘Like many other companies, we’re currently transitioning from a brick-and-mortar retail business to a customer-friendly, e-commerce driven model. We will have more details to share in the coming weeks as our plans are solidified,’ CEO and President of Jenny Craig Mandy Dowson told Bloomberg.
Jenny Craig was founded in 1983, selling programs offering nutritionally balanced diets specially curated to help people, (mainly women) lose weight.
This news comes shortly after clothing retailer GAP and Bed Bath & Beyond prepare to file for bankruptcy immediately after mass closures and employee layoffs.
