With the slightly closer state senate passing a ban on transgender treatment for kids, it will almost certainly pass in the even more GOP dominated state house. Governor Ron DeSantis is ready to sign the bill into law.

The bill bans anyone under 18 from having surgery or taking prescription hormones to change their gender. Colleges, local governments and state workers also won’t be able to obtain this treatment through their state health care coverage.

GOP State Senator Clay Yarborough, the sponsor of the bill, claimed victory saying, “We need to let kids be kids and our laws need to set appropriate boundaries that respect the rights and responsibilities of parents by protecting children from the very serious health and safety concerns associated with these treatments.”

One of the bills on the floor would also give custody to the opposing parent should the other give hormone treatment to their child.

Democratic Senator Shevrin Jones implied, however, that this bill villainizes a segment of kids for not feeling comfortable in their original gender. “They’re committing suicide because of how they’re treated.”

Florida will become the 13th state to enact such a law, with 19 others currently considering it.
