The enormous chasm that divides the country and Congress is going to be on full and ugly display for the world to see for the immediate future. The Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Amy Coney Barrett got underway in the Senate Monday morning, and in case you had convinced yourself this would be a smooth process, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee warned everyone that was not going to be the case. Sen. Lindsey Graham kicked things off by warning of a “long contentious week. This is probably not about persuading each other,” he said, noting that every single Republican would vote to confirm her, while every democrat will oppose her confirmation.
Barrett is in for a long week of tough questions on a variety of issues as she looks to looks to fill the seat of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The Associated Press reported on Sunday night that in Barrett’s remarks she is likely to say “I have been nominated to fill Justice Ginsburg’s seat, but no one will ever take her place.”
President Trump, who is following the confirmation hearings and adding his two cents via Twitter, tweeted Monday morning, “The Republicans are giving the Democrats a great deal of time, which is not mandated, to make their self-serving statements relative to our great new future Supreme Court Justice. Personally, I would pull back, approve, and go for STIMULUS for the people!!!”
In an interview on Fox News “Sunday Morning Futures” Sen. Lindsey Graham laid out his timeline with the committee having hearings Monday through Thursday this week, before beginning the markup of the nomination Thursday afternoon, pushing the final committee vote to next Thursday. “We’ll come back holding over a week and vote her out of committee on October the 22nd,” Graham said. “I believe she will be confirmed no later than Tuesday, a week before the election.”
