UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot on Wednesday outside the Hilton Hotel in New York City in what police believe was a targeted attack. The masked gunman, armed with a suppressed pistol, shot Thompson in the chest before fleeing the scene on a bicycle. The shooter is still at large.

According to security camera footage first released online by New York Post reporter Jon Levine, the gunman, identified only as a White male, came up behind Thompson as he approached the hotel, firing an initial shot that struck him in the back, causing him to stumble and fall to the ground. The shooter fired several more times, appearing to fumble with the gun between shots as if it were jammed.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny said during a press conference on Wednesday that the suspect’s handling of the malfunction means he is likely familiar with using firearms.

“I want to be clear: at this time, every indication is that this was a premeditated, pre-planned, targeted attack,” said New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

After fleeing the scene on foot, the shooter hopped on a city e-bike and escaped into Central Park.

Thompson, 50, was in New York for an investor conference, which was subsequently canceled following the incident. He had been with UnitedHealth Group since 2004 and became CEO of its insurance division in April 2021. Police are searching for the suspect, and the investigation is ongoing. A $10,000 reward has been offered for any information leading to his capture.
